Day +8 – June 22, 2018

It has been 8 days since Jeffrey received his Bone Marrow Transplant and 11 days since his last dose of Chemotherapy. The Chemotherapy is finishing up its job of wiping out Jeffrey’s old immune system as expected. Jeffrey’s lab counts for his White Blood Cell Count and Absolute Neutrophil Count(ANC) reached zero on Tuesday, June 19, 2018. Now it is a waiting game to see when his new stem cells get settled and start making new cells. Jeffrey will continue to receive transfusions of blood and platelets until his new stem cells can take over.
We are diligently doing Jeffrey’s mouth and perineal care to keep the Chemotherapy-induced mucositis away for as long as possible. Mucositis is almost guaranteed to happen during the next week. Our goal is to delay the onset and reduce the severity as much as possible. It does appear that he is starting to get some sores in his mouth and throat. So far, they are very small and don’t appear to be bugging Jeffrey very much.
Jeffrey received a transfusion of Blood on Wednesday and platelets on Tuesday, Thursday and this morning (Friday) to bring his counts above his personal minimums. Platelets are the slowest to recover from the Bone Marrow Transplant. One of the main criteria for Jeffrey to go home is for him to hold on to his platelets for at least three days.
Keep Jeffrey in your prayers and keep those good thoughts coming his way.
