On evening of June 4, 2017, our world was turned upside-down. We took Jeffrey to Emergency with shortness of breath and exhaustion. After a quick blood test, the doctor told us that Jeffrey needed a blood transfusion and would be transferred to Rady’s Children’s Hospital. The transfer to Rady’s was completed at 4:00am on June 5, 2017. The doctor informed us that there was a good chance that Jeffrey had Leukemia. The news left the family devastated. Over the next few days, Jeffrey had a bone biopsy and dozens of additional tests which revealed that he did not have Leukemia. However, it turned out to be much worse as he was diagnosed with an exceedingly rare hematological condition called Myelofibrosis. Myelofibrosis occurs most often in adults with fewer than 100 cases of Pediatric Myelofibrosis being reported in the world (2014).
